Mental Health Awareness week
APRIL - JUNE 20
It's Mental Health Awareness week this week, and I thought appropriate to THANK YOU ALL for being mega supporters and helping me raise this money.
20% of all your classes I'm giving to the charity James Place, which is a suicide prevention and mental health charity based in Liverpool (soon to be in London and nationwide too). James was a friend of mine at Uni, and this was set up by his mother and father. Glad to say I've been a real busy bee and covered 133 hours in this lockdown period so far, and made just over £300, which is not masses, but it's a good dose of love from us all - so THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of my heart.
There’s a blog post here, which outlines how they are responding to the Covid crisis:. In summary, though, they are responding in three key ways. Firstly, they have moved their entire service in Liverpool online, so that they can continue to see and support men in crisis, and take on new referrals. Secondly, they have expanded their offer to include a specific package for frontline workers who are working in these extraordinary circumstances and who would benefit from support from their expert team. Finally, they are speeding up, rather than slowing down their plans to open in London. Beyond London, they are also looking to open more centres to reach more men in suicidal crisis around the country.
They are certainly working hard and moving fast! The work they do is independently evaluated by Liverpool John Moores University, and shows striking improvements for men who use their service. The full evaluation will be published in the next few months. Obviously their work is particularly vital as men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, and suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50.
